Comparison of granite exports between India and Brazil

What was the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the granite products exports of the world’s largest suppliers?

India, with an average export of $ 1.5 billion, is the largest exporter of granite products in the world. Brazil follows from a distance with exports that excess of $ 500 million.

India between years 2016 – 2020 records a marginal increase in the value of exports of finished granite products + 0.27% while Brazil falls -42%. During the same period, India in the export of granite blocks and slabs recorded an increase in the value of exports + 19.72% while Brazil decreased -35.9%.

In 2020 with the trade war between the USA. – China in progress, Covid-19 pandemic breaks out. The impact on the export of granite products, as we will see in the following tables, was different for the two countries. Specifically, the statistics of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry – Department of Commerce – Government of India, show that India between 2019 – 2020 records an increase in the value of exports of  granite blocks and slabs by + 3.74% and finished granite products + 1.53%. On the contrary, Brazil, according to the data of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, records a decrease in the value of exports of granite blocks and slabs by -15.53% and in finished granite products by -9.29%.

In the following Tables we see the monthly changes in the exports of granite blocks and slabs and finished granites of India and Brazil between 2019 – 2020.

In the Tables we see the different course of exports of the two countries during 2020. For India the decline is limited to the critical months when the Covid-19 pandemic spreads rapidly leading to a lockdown of the world market. For Brazil, on the other hand, the course of exports shows significant declining fluctuations.

The month with the highest exports of granite blocks and slabs for India was July while for Brazil it was May. In finished granite products, the month with the highest exports for India was September and for Brazil August.

680223: Granite and articles thereof, simply cut or sawn, with a flat or even surface (excluding with a completely or partly planed, sand-dressed, coarsely or finely ground or polished surface, tiles, cubes and similar articles of subheading 6802 10 00 , setts, curbstones and flagstones).
