Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is raising the bar in the short swing radius wheeled excavator category with the next generation of the EWR150 and EWR170 models—introducing, for the first time in the industry, a foldable step for even safer cab access.

The new generation is now available, continuing the legacy of its predecessors with a host of upgrades, including increased reach, enhanced lifting capacity, a front swing radius reduced by over 0.5 meters, and a 10% increase in engine power for the EWR150 model.

A patented, electronically controlled, foldable step—an industry-first innovation from Volvo—will also be introduced in these models starting in 2026, along with a new four-wheel steering system.

Boasting the shortest rear swing radius in their class, combined with a reduced front swing radius, the EWR150 and EWR170 excavators are ideal for urban job sites and confined spaces.

Marc Engels, Global Product Manager for Wheeled Excavators at Volvo Construction Equipment, commented:

“We introduced the EWR150 to the market in 2016, followed by the EWR170 in 2018. Since then, these machines have established themselves as market leaders in their class. Simply put, the best short swing radius 17- and 15-ton wheeled excavators on the market just got even better with the arrival of the New Generation!”

More Power and Greater Reach

The already renowned performance of the EWR150 and EWR170 has been taken to the next level, with enhanced lifting capacity at the front of the machine, made possible by larger lift cylinders. Together with a longer dual boom, offering extended reach, these short swing radius wheeled excavators are built to deliver top results.

The EWR150 now offers nearly 10% more engine power than the previous generation, thanks to its new 115 kW engine, giving it the ability to handle demanding heavy-duty tasks—matching the power output of the existing EWR170 engine.

The powerful engine in both models enables faster work cycles, increased digging force, and the ability to operate larger attachments with ease. Swing torque is also increased by 10% compared to the previous generation, allowing for smoother and more controlled machine movements, enhancing both precision and efficiency.

Get to Work with Tailored Configurations

Highly versatile, the EWR150 and EWR170 can be configured in various ways to meet individual customer needs. For example, customers can choose between boom lengths of 2.0m, 2.4m, or 2.6m for the EWR150, and 2.0m, 2.5m, or 3.1m for the EWR170.

The undercarriage is also customizable, with front and rear options including outriggers, a blade, or neither. A 2.75m-wide axle, previously offered only on the EWR170, is now also available on the EWR150—providing extra stability during side lifting and greater flexibility on the job site.

A wide range of Volvo attachments—such as buckets and breakers—have been engineered to work in perfect harmony with the versatile EWR150 and EWR170, maximizing performance across a variety of applications.

For hydraulic attachments, the auxiliary lines X1 and X3 have been enlarged to reduce pressure loss. The flow on the X3 line has increased from 70 to 120 liters/minute, supplying the necessary pressure for tiltrotator operation. An additional X4 auxiliary line is available as an option.

Guaranteed Profitability with Maximum Efficiency

The Volvo EWR150 and EWR170 are built for efficiency, incorporating advanced engine technology and intelligent hydraulic systems that reduce fuel consumption while maintaining peak performance. The advanced load-sensing electro-hydraulic system ensures hydraulic power is delivered only when needed, providing total control, smooth operation, and increased productivity for any task. The result is superb machine responsiveness and optimal efficiency.

Additional features such as auto-idle and auto engine shutdown further boost efficiency, while an optional extra fuel tank mounted within the chassis offers extended operating time between refueling stops.

When it comes to profitability, downtime is the enemy. The EWR150 and EWR170 are designed with maximum uptime in mind. From their robust frame to their high-quality attachments, every component is built for durability, ensuring long-term use and minimal downtime.

Daily maintenance checks are quick and simple, with grouped grease points, ground-level access to service points, and an optional quick hydraulic oil refill system that reduces downtime and boosts productivity.

During servicing, customers can ensure safety and compliance with the Lockout/Tagout function, which allows the technician to isolate the machine’s electrical power during maintenance, preventing accidental startup.

The Ultimate Operator Environment

One of the standout upgrades in the EWR150 and EWR170 models is the newly redesigned cab, which focuses on operator comfort and convenience. Exceptional visibility, low noise levels, and ergonomic controls ensure the operator stays comfortable and focused throughout the workday. Joystick controls are intuitive, storage options are abundant, and features such as wireless phone charging, USB ports, automatic cab lighting, and optional add-ons like a cleaning air compressor and right-side sunshade enhance the operator experience.

The new operator interface features a 12.8-inch touchscreen display built into the right console, always within sight and reach as the operator moves. This interactive, integrated screen gives users easy access to core functions such as media, camera views, climate control, and machine status.

Operators stay comfortable and productive in the upgraded seat, available in four levels, with air suspension, cooling/heating system, and 2- or 3-point seat belts. New ergonomic armrests feature fewer switches and no longer interfere with the tilting console, enhancing cabin ergonomics and operator comfort even further.

Each operator has their own working style, and with a range of factory options—such as A9, L8, and simplified L8 joysticks—the EWR150 and EWR170 can be tailored precisely to suit individual preferences. Inside the cab, features such as electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors allow the operator to prepare the machine for optimal safety and performance before starting the shift.

Customers can further enhance the agility and maneuverability of the EWR150 and EWR170 with the new optional four-wheel steering system—a category innovation that significantly reduces turning radius, ideal for navigating tight spaces.

Safety as a Top Priority

The operator’s exceptional comfort is matched by a range of features that deliver the high level of safety expected from a Volvo machine. One such feature is the new comfortable cabin access ladder. Patented by Volvo, this electronically foldable ladder descends from a recessed compartment on the side of the machine, offering safe and easy entry and exit. For added safety, the machine cannot rotate or move while the ladder is deployed.

Integrated rear and right-side cameras further improve visibility. Inside the redesigned cab, operators enjoy class-leading 360-degree visibility, reducing blind spots and enhancing job site safety. The optional Volvo Smart View system provides real-time, high-resolution 360-degree visibility around the machine.

A selection of powerful work lights enhances visibility both inside and outside the machine in low-light conditions, including new LED lights seamlessly integrated into the counterweight for optimal illumination and safety. A variety of additional light and beacon options allow the machine to be configured to meet specific application lighting needs.

When transporting the machine, four newly positioned tie-down points—two at the front and two at the rear—make securing the machine safe and easy, simplifying transport on low-bed trucks or similar carriers.
