The Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mineral Exploration (HSGME) has implemented an exceedingly important project regarding the first digital map, “Hellenic Atlas of Marbles”. The map includes all the Greek marble (natural decorative rocks) and their physical, mechanical and aesthetic characteristics.

The digital map, implemented within the country’s digital transformation, is translated into English to be used by the stakeholders of the “Marble” sector at home and abroad.

Through the interactive application, developed specifically for the needs of the project and the “Atlas of Marbles”, a digital map is displayed showing almost all types of natural decorative stones (calcareous and dolomitic marbles, limestones, slates, sandstones, etc.), whose extraction takes place in the marble bearing areas of the country, in licensed quarries. By selecting one of these, the user can access a range of useful information while it is essentially an interactive map and a dynamic database continuously updated with the newest types of ornamental rocks in Greece.

“Each marble has been given its name according to the EN 12440 standard and not its commercial name. For each of them, various information has been posted. Some examples of its applications and uses are the geological data, petrographic data, physical and mechanical characteristics,” emphasizes Dr Konstantinos Laskaridis, technical Responsible for the Accredited Ornamental Stones Quality Control Laboratory “LITHOS” of HSGME.

Access to the contents of the digital map “Hellenic Atlas of Marbles” is possible through the website of HSGME at the relevant link:
