The Egyptian government is accelerating its ambitious plan to transform the city of Arish, located in the Northern Sinai Peninsula, into a premier regional transport and logistics hub. At the heart of this transformation is the comprehensive redevelopment of the Port of Arish, aimed at creating a vital link between Sinai’s industrial and mining sectors and the international markets of Europe and Asia.
Strategic Infrastructure for the Natural Stone Sector
The expansion of Arish Port is more than just a logistical upgrade; it is a strategic move to bolster the region’s export capabilities. According to official reports, the project includes the construction of advanced storage facilities and four silos with a total capacity of 40,000 tons.
For the natural stone and construction materials industry, this development is crucial. The port is specifically designed to facilitate the export of marble, sand, salt, and cement—products for which the Sinai Peninsula is internationally renowned. The port’s proximity to rich raw material sources is expected to drastically reduce transportation costs, making Egyptian natural stone products even more competitive on the global stage.
Project Details and Connectivity
The project is being implemented in phases, with the first and third phases already completed. Key features include:
-
New Berths: Construction of the “Sinai” pier (250m), the “Tahya Misr” pier (915m), and a 1,000-meter tourist berth.
-
Logistics Zone: A massive 603-acre zone featuring advanced loading/unloading yards and refrigerated storage for transit trade.
-
Rail Link: A critical 12km railway link connecting the port to the national network via the Bir al-Abd–Arish–Taba line, linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.
Railway Network Connectivity
One of the most critical parameters of the project is the port’s connection to Egypt’s national railway network via the Bir al-Abd – Arish – Taba line. This 12-kilometer railway axis will serve as a “bridge” between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea (Gulf of Aqaba), allowing for the rapid and cost-effective movement of goods and raw materials.
Economic Impact
The transformation of Arish into a logistics hub is part of Egypt’s broader national strategy to become a global transit trade center. For the local economy of Sinai, the project promises the creation of thousands of jobs and the full integration of the peninsula’s industrial production into the international trade arena.
With the completion of the second phase in the Eastern Basin, the Port of Arish is expected to emerge as one of the most modern ports in the Eastern Mediterranean, offering new prospects for the export of mineral wealth and processed marble to Western markets.
