The Carrara marble quarries continue to fascinate visitors from all over the world. The world’s most famous natural stone – celebrated since antiquity and used by masters such as Michelangelo – remains an irresistible attraction, combining history, culture and breathtaking landscapes.
According to Francesca Dell’Amico, owner of Marmotour and of one of the most extraordinary underground quarries, the summer season has brought exceptional results. Inside her quarry, visitors can admire a unique artistic feature: a massive mural by Ozmo, covering 160 square meters and reproducing Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, where contemporary creativity meets the timeless essence of marble.
“The season is going extremely well,” says Dell’Amico. “There are many foreign tourists but also a huge number of Italians, especially in August, which is the traditional holiday month. Word of mouth works better than any advertising: people are captivated by the quarries. On some days, there are so many visitors that it becomes challenging to manage them.”
This surge highlights the growing demand for experiential tourism that merges nature, art, and marble culture. Despite occasional confusion – some visitors mistake one quarry for another, sometimes leaving reviews for the wrong site – the flow of tourists remains consistently high.
Meanwhile, Carrara’s historic city center is also thriving, thanks to a full calendar of festivals and cultural events organized by the municipality and local associations, which further enhance the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Carrara confirms its role not only as the global capital of marble extraction and processing, but also as a dynamic tourist destination, able to transform its millenary tradition into a living, engaging experience for travelers from across the globe.
