Using gentle conservation techniques and with absolute respect for the stone’s natural structure, Athens’ iconic monument regains its splendor.

One of the world’s most significant architectural and sports heritage sites, the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), is undergoing an extensive and organized restoration and cleaning of its marble surfaces for the first time in over 120 years.

The only stadium in the world constructed entirely from white Pentelic marble—the exact same material used to build the Parthenon—is receiving essential care to remove accumulated environmental pollutants and the signs of natural aging.

Gentle Techniques to Protect the Natural Stone

The cleaning process is an exceptionally delicate endeavor, as the objective is not artificial “bleaching” or altering the marble’s natural historical patina, but removing harmful surface deposits:

  • Controlled Water Pressure: The 47 tiers of marble steps are cleaned using low, controlled water pressure to avoid stressing the crystalline structure of the Pentelic marble.

  • Steam Treatment: For stubborn organic stains (such as soft drink residues, chewing gum, and atmospheric pollutants that have penetrated the surface over decades), specialized teams apply localized steam.

  • Removal of Organic Growth: In shaded areas of the stadium receiving minimal sunlight, layers of algae and micro-vegetation are carefully cleared.

Scientific Oversight & Project Scope

The restoration works are conducted under the scientific supervision of the distinguished architect and academic Manolis Korres, official advisor to the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), in close collaboration with certified conservators from the Greek Ministry of Culture.

The interventions are scheduled to be completed progressively by the end of 2026, alongside broader infrastructure upgrades, including new track surfaces and modernized lighting installations.

The Timeless Value of Greek Marble

This landmark project highlights once again the durability and exceptional aesthetic excellence of Greek marble. As both a structural and decorative material, Pentelic marble proves that with proper, gentle conservation methods, it can preserve its natural radiance and architectural supremacy across centuries.
