“MARBLE-X” Initiative: A European Centre of Vocational Excellence for the Future of Natural Stone

The European natural stone industry stands at a pivotal juncture, where a long-standing tradition must fully align with the demands of the digital era and climate neutrality. In this context, the new European initiative MARBLE-X serves as a catalyst. It is a highly specialized project funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ program within the framework of Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs).

Consortium Composition: An Alliance of Stone Industry Leaders

At the core of MARBLE-X are countries with a rich tradition and leading international presence in natural stone production and export. The project consortium brings together:

  • Universities and Technology Institutes driving applied research and advanced technologies.

  • Vocational Education and Training (VET) Providers specialized in technical skill development.

  • Industry Associations from traditional marble-producing European nations such as Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece, ensuring that project activities align directly with market demands.

The Three Core Pillars of the Initiative

MARBLE-X aligns with the official European Commission guidelines for workforce upskilling and reskilling, focusing on three critical domains:

1. Digital Transformation (Industry 4.0)

The integration of digital technology is fundamentally redefining quarry operations and processing units:

  • Digital Twins: Utilizing advanced simulation models for 3D quarry planning, optimizing deposit extraction, and minimizing operational risk.

  • Robotics & CAD/CAM Systems: Training personnel to operate 5-axis CNC machinery and robotic cutting arms, enabling high-precision processing and complex architectural forms.

2. Green Transition & Circular Economy

Sustainability is now an essential prerequisite for licensing and operating modern facilities:

  • Sustainable By-product Management: Developing methods to process marble sludge and quarry waste, repurposing them into raw materials for alternative industrial applications or eco-friendly building materials.

  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: Implementing best practices to reduce energy and water consumption throughout the extraction and processing phases.

3. European Mobility (Erasmus+ Mobility)

MARBLE-X goes beyond theoretical learning by investing in hands-on exchange programs for technical students, industry professionals, and trainers across partner countries. This mobility facilitates direct knowledge transfer and the dissemination of best practices, enhancing the global competitiveness of European natural stone.
