From Rapid Growth to Structural Challenges – A Decade in Review

Between 2015 and 2018, Greek marble exports surged, with value more than doubling – from €44.9 million to over €92 million – and volume approaching 240,000 tons. This growth was fueled mainly by China’s strong demand for raw materials.

However, 2019 marked a turning point. The US–China trade war negatively impacted Chinese imports, triggering a decline in Greek exports: –9% in value, –19% in volume. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 deepened the pressure, disrupting global supply chains and construction activity.

2021 brought a short-lived recovery, but the period from 2022 to 2025 confirms a downward trend. Q1 2025 recorded the lowest export figures in the last nine years.

Behind the Decline – Comparative Figures

Year Export Value (€) Quantity (tons) % Change from 2021
2021 €74.1 million 199,000
2025 €60.4 million 156,000 –18.47% (value), –21.75% (volume)

The year-on-year drop from 2024 to 2025 was –7.78% in value and –6.47% in quantity – confirming a sustained downward trajectory.

Product Breakdown – Shift Toward Processed Marble

Segment-level analysis reveals significant differences:

Raw Marble:

  • Strong growth from €15.8M (2015) to €60.2M (2018)

  • Sharp drop post-2019

  • Q1 2025: only €22.8M – the lowest in the decade

Processed Marble:

  • Value stable between €35M–€38M (2020–2025)

  • Significant increase in average price per ton: from €663 (2020) to €845 (2025)

This trend signals a strategic shift in Greece’s export structure, favoring higher-value, processed marble products that are more resilient to external shocks.

China Still Dominant – The Need for Diversification

Despite declining demand, China maintains a dominant position:

Raw Marble to China (Q1 2025):

  • 25.61% of total export value

  • 45.04% of total quantity

Total Marble Exports to China (raw + processed):

  • 26.38% of total value

  • 47.21% of total quantity

Over 70% of exports are concentrated in five markets – China, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Cyprus – underlining the urgency for geographic diversification to reduce external vulnerability.
