The marble industry in Carrara continues to generate strong economic value despite a marked decline in production volumes, according to data presented to the 3rd Permanent Advisory Committee on Marble Policies by director Giuseppe Bruschi.
While the Municipality recorded €25.398 million in revenues from quarrying activities, the figure reflects public income rather than the overall performance of the sector. The underlying industrial data point instead to a structural shift: less material extracted, but higher value per unit.
Block production in 2025 fell to just over 600,000 tons, marking one of the lowest levels in decades and confirming a long-term downward trend. Notably, output was even lower than during the COVID-19 years, highlighting the depth of the contraction. Early figures from 2026 suggest that production is likely to remain broadly in line with these reduced levels.
At the same time, other categories show mixed dynamics. White chips reached 873,000 tons, slightly below the previous year, while dark chips increased to 1.2 million tons. Rock material production dropped sharply, halving compared to 2024, whereas soil output remained stable at around 293,000 tons, albeit significantly below earlier peak years.
Despite declining volumes, the sector continues to sustain high economic returns, supported by rising prices and strong international demand for high-quality marble. This reinforces a broader transition from a volume-driven model to one focused on value.
A further development in 2025 is the introduction of a water-related contribution, requiring quarry operators to support the cost of water treatment linked to extraction activities. Around €120,000 had already been allocated for this purpose in the first four months of the year.
The data ultimately outline an industry that is producing less in physical terms, but maintaining — and in some cases increasing — its economic significance. The key challenge ahead will be balancing this high-value model with employment and long-term sustainability.
