India and Brazil are the largest granite exporters in the world. Although the two countries’ marble exports are much lower than granite, they are among the top 10 largest marble exporters worldwide. Their leading positions come after the rapid rise in exports over the last five years.

More specifically, India set a five-year record in granite and marble export value in 2021. In the same year, Brazil’s marble exports were at a five-year high. Even though 2021 granite exports were higher than 2019 and 2020, they did not reach 2017 levels.

The table below shows the changes (%) in the value and quantity of India’s and Brazil’s granite exports between 2020 and 2021:

Similarly, the table below shows the changes (%) in the value and quantity of India’s and Brazil’s marble exports between 2020 and 2021:

The two tables show that Brazil’s granite and marble exports increased more than India’s.

The primary destination of both countries’ unfinished granite and marble is China, while the leading destination of processed granite and marble is the United States. However, current transportation challenges and the distance between India and China and Brazil and the U.S. explain the trend in exports.

In 2021, India’s granite exports exceeded $1.6 billion and Brazil’s exceeded $639 million. The two countries’ marble exports hovered around the same level at $125 million each.
