Jim Hieb, CEO of the Natural Stone Institute, analyzed the impact of tariffs, the rise in silicosis cases, and the importance of educating the architectural community for market growth.

XIAMEN, CHINA – The current landscape and key challenges of the natural stone market in the United States were presented by Jim Hieb, representing the Natural Stone Institute (NSI), during his speech on the first day of the Xiamen International Stone Fair. The presentation, titled “State of the Natural Stone Industry (U.S.A. perspective),” highlighted critical issues affecting the sector, from trade policies to workplace safety and demand formation.

1. The “Vice” of Tariffs and Uncertainty Jim Hieb underscored that tariffs imposed by the U.S. government continue to cause significant market uncertainty. According to NSI:

  • Tariffs directly impact approximately 200,000 jobs in the U.S. stone industry.

  • Pending tariff revenue refunds are affecting business liquidity.

  • The Institute advocates for open and fair trade, emphasizing the need for international stability.

2. The Silicosis Crisis: Health and Legal Pressures The most critical issue highlighted is exposure to crystalline silica and the rise of silicosis. The data is revealing:

  • 450+ cases have been recorded in California alone.

  • 400+ lawsuits have been filed against fabricators and distributors.

  • This situation creates significant financial and legal pressure on the industry.

Legislative Initiative: In January 2026, the NSI submitted a briefing in Washington, seeking federal legislation to protect slab sellers from legal prosecution when not involved in fabrication.

Education and Prevention: Meanwhile, over 10,000 employees have been trained, and safety certifications (Silica & Slab Safety Certificate) are being promoted. A partnership with the Yale School of Medicine is also instrumental in developing scientific safety guidelines.

3. Educating Designers: The Key to Growth To boost demand, the NSI is strategically investing in the education of the architectural and design community. Specifically:

  • More than 10,000 architects and designers have already been informed.

  • Over 20 specialized educational programs with continuing education credits are offered.

  • The Natural Stone Catalog (Version 2.0), launched in August 2025, is expanding globally.

As Jim Hieb noted: “An educated architect means more use of natural stone.”

An Industry in Global Transition The presentation at Xiamen highlighted that the natural stone industry is in a transition phase. However, through coordinated actions and educational investments, the sector is attempting to shape a more sustainable future.
