Every year, thousands of Americans decide to pack up their things and move to a another state, whether it’s to pursue new career opportunities, seek more pleasant climates, or downsize due to high cost of living.

This visualization shows the top five states that American residents moved to in 2023 and visualizes their migration inflows, with the top three states of origin for each destination labelled.

State-by-state migration flow data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau and is updated as of August 2024.

Only residents aged one year and older were included and the data includes Puerto Rico but does not include those moving from a foreign country or another U.S. island territory.

Which States Did Americans Move To In 2023?

Below, the top five states that attracted the most American movers in 2023 are presented, along with the total number of new residents they gained from other states and the number of new residents originating from their top three source states.

U.S. Census Bureau data shows that 12% of Americans moved to a different residence within the U.S. in 2023.

Some stayed close to home and moved within their home state, while others embarked on cross-country relocations. Out of those who moved to different residence in 2023, 80% moved within their state and 20% moved to a different state, according to census data.
