Turkey’s marble exports have stood out in recent years in the Chinese market. According to Turkish authorities, more than 50% of the exported Turkish marble heads to China. Last year, Turkish exporters sold 3.92 million tons of marble blocks and slabs to China worth 767.06 million US dollars, as can be seen after processing the statistical data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute.
The US-China trade war has produced many side effects to the economies involved with the two countries. Turkey could not be excluded, as China absorbs almost 1.9% of the total Turkish goods exports. How has Turkey’s export growth of marble blocks and slabs been affected this year? Stonenews.eu, after collecting and studying the relevant statistical data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute, is presenting Turkey’s marble blocks and slabs export growth to China during the first half of 2019.
As presented at the table, Turkey’s marble blocks and slabs export growth followed an overall downward trend during the first half of 2019 both in value and quantity of exports, compared to the same period of time of 2018. When it comes for export value, June holds the lead in negative growth (-39.46%), while May showed minimum change from the one of the previous year (-0.18%). As for quantity of exports, June again had the greatest loss (-44.15%) compared to previous year’s same month.
But, is this downward trend just temporary? Has Turkish exporting activity of marble blocks and slabs to China seen fluctuations over the years? Stonenews.eu has the answers at the following diagrams.
Turkey’s value of marble blocks and slabs exports to China from 2013 to 2018 shows large fluctuations. 2013 was a golden year with marble blocks and slabs exports to China of 971 million US dollars value. The following years showed important declines, until 2017 when the export value rose again, close to 2013’s numbers. The declining trend continued in 2018, which closed as mentioned above.
As for quantity of Turkey’s marble blocks and slabs exports to China, it remained at the same path as export value, with severe fluctuations and a grand comeback in 2017. 2018 closed with Turkey exporting to China 3.92 million tons of marble blocks and slabs.
What is important though is that, despite the large decline both in value and quantity of exports from 2013 to 2016, the unit value of marble blocks and slabs exports from Turkey to China followed a rather stable course.
