For the fifth consecutive year, Volvo Trucks maintains its position as the market leader in the European heavy-duty electric truck segment. By the end of 2024, the company held a 47% market share, with 1,970 Volvo electric trucks registered across Europe. The five largest markets for Volvo’s electric trucks in 2024 were Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland. Volvo Trucks is also a leader in the North American market, commanding over 40% of the heavy-duty electric truck segment in 2024.

“We are proud to lead the transition towards zero-emission transport. We offer a strong portfolio of electric trucks designed for regional, urban, and construction transport. Our next electric truck will have an extended range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

He also expressed gratitude to transport companies investing in electric trucks: “I want to thank all the transport companies, both large and small, for pioneering this transition and choosing Volvo as their partner on the journey towards zero emissions. I also want to extend my thanks to our dealers, suppliers, and colleagues within the Volvo Group.”

Strong Momentum in Electric Truck Adoption

Since launching serial production of electric trucks in 2019, Volvo Trucks has introduced eight electric truck models and delivered more than 4,800 electric trucks to customers worldwide. The company’s growing electric fleet has collectively covered over 140 million kilometers in real-world operations, helping customers reduce emissions across various transport sectors.

“More electric trucks are hitting the roads, expanding into new geographical areas, and reducing emissions for our customers every day. It is incredible to witness this transformation,” says Alm.

The Road Ahead for Electric Truck Adoption

Despite the increasing adoption of electric trucks, they still represent only 1.3% of the total truck market in Europe. Scaling up their use depends on several key factors, including the expansion of public charging infrastructure, sufficient electricity grid capacity, a competitive total cost of ownership for transporters, government incentives for zero-emission transport, and a sustainable supply chain.

“To accelerate the shift to zero-emission transport, having electric trucks ready is not enough. Our analysis suggests that Europe will need 40,000 fast chargers along major highways to support a projected 400,000 electric trucks by 2030. Additionally, more effective financial policies are required to make operating electric trucks profitable for all transport companies,” Alm explains.

“We are engaged in continuous dialogue with all stakeholders because it is clear that much more needs to be done, and with a greater sense of urgency, to ensure that this transition accelerates.”

Volvo Trucks remains committed to leading the industry towards sustainable transport solutions, playing a crucial role in the journey towards a cleaner and more efficient future for heavy-duty transport.
