A comprehensive digital mapping of all active quarrying operations in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace — Greece’s most vital region for marble extraction — has now been completed, marking a significant milestone in the effort to modernize oversight and policy-making in the mining sector.
The Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace announced the conclusion of this initiative, which was led by the Directorate of Technical Inspection. The project focused on cataloging and visualizing all active quarry cases within the region, known for producing more than 70% of the country’s total marble output — cementing its status as the epicenter of Greek marble production.
At the heart of the initiative lies an interactive map, which displays active quarry sites across various stages of operation, from licensing and exploitation to land restoration. The tool is designed not only for industry stakeholders but also for public authorities, aiming to enhance transparency, facilitate data-driven decision-making, and improve environmental management practices.
This new digital framework represents a step forward in streamlining administrative monitoring while providing a clearer picture of the region’s extractive landscape — both literally and figuratively.
