Pakistan is preparing to introduce a National Marble Policy aimed at strengthening exports and fostering industrial development in the country’s marble sector, according to Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production.
During a high-level meeting in Islamabad with representatives of the All Pakistan Marble Industry Association and the Pakistan Stone Development Company (PASDEC) on Thursday, Mr. Khan addressed key challenges facing the marble industry, including barriers to exports, limited value addition, and the need for targeted incentives.
Mr. Khan announced that the marble sector would soon be formally recognized as an industry, underscoring its potential to play a significant role in Pakistan’s economic growth. He emphasized that while Pakistan’s marble is regarded globally for its premium quality, the country must enhance value addition, branding, and marketing to increase its share in international markets.
The Special Assistant highlighted that the government is actively working with industry stakeholders to implement policy reforms designed to improve the competitiveness and productivity of the sector. Strengthening the marble industry, he noted, would not only generate employment opportunities but also create a more favorable environment for investors and exporters.
Mr. Khan urged both PASDEC and the private sector to adopt modern technologies and innovative practices in marble processing to improve efficiency and quality standards. He further directed PASDEC and the Marble Association to develop collaborative proposals with Italy, focusing on technology transfer, capacity building, and export enhancement.
The proposed National Marble Policy is expected to serve as a strategic framework for sustainable growth, enabling Pakistan to better harness its natural stone resources and position itself as a competitive player in the global marble market.
