Did Brazil’s granite and marble exports increase or decrease in the first quarter of 2021?

Brazil is one of the largest suppliers of granite and marble in the world. However, its exports are limited to three main destinations, the USA, China and Italy. Given this, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which particularly affected these countries – destinations, negatively affected Brazil’s exports in the first quarter of 2020.

In the first quarter, Brazil’s exports recovered, recording a significant increase, especially in finished granites and marbles. In the Table below we see the changes (%) of the exports of finished granite and marble of Brazil between the relevant quarters.

The rapid increase in exports in the first quarter of 2021 exceeded not only the levels of 2020 but also of 2019, especially in exports of finished marble. The rise is due to the increase in the US. which account for about 80% of Brazil’s exports of finished granite and marble. The average price per tonne increased more in finished marbles than granites.

Exports of granite and marble blocks and slabs also increased. In the Table below we see the changes (%) of the exports of granite and marble block and slabs  of Brazil between the relevant quarters.

In the Table we observe that in the granites blocks and slabs  the value of exports remained marginally stable with a small increase in quantity. In contrast to marble blocks and slabs  we see a large increase in value and a small decrease in quantity. Total exports were positively affected by the increase in exports to China, which is the main destination for Brazil’s exports of granite and marble blocks and slabs. On the contrary, they were negatively affected by the big drop to Italy, Brazil’s second main export destination.
