The Pietra Naturale Autentica (PNA) Network was established with the aim of promoting the use of natural stone across all applications. Over time, its mission has expanded to address a vital contemporary goal: offering international stakeholders specialized technical support to drive sustainability within the natural stone sector.
Recognizing the growing demand for reliable technical information from architects and designers, the PNA Network assembled a team of experts, including contributions from the prestigious Polytechnic University of Turin. This initiative has allowed the network to take significant steps toward embedding sustainability into the core practices of the natural stone industry.
Milestones in Sustainability
The PNA Network has already made remarkable progress on its sustainability journey. In 2023, it conducted the first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the Italian natural stone industry. This groundbreaking analysis was a crucial step in quantifying the environmental impact of natural stone, providing data to improve practices and enhance transparency. Building on this achievement, the network went further in 2024, completing the first-ever Global Life Cycle Assessment for natural stone, setting a new international standard for the industry.
Ambitious Goals for the Future
The PNA Network is committed to advancing its sustainability efforts with even more ambitious projects. By 2025, it plans to produce the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the Italian natural stone sector. Looking beyond national borders, the network is aiming to collaborate with major international stone associations through the Natural Stone Strategic Alliance (NSSA) to assess the feasibility of a Global EPD by 2026. This would mark a monumental step toward aligning the global natural stone industry with sustainability benchmarks and environmental responsibility.
