The Torlonia Foundation, established by Prince Alessandro Torlonia to preserve and promote the Torlonia Collection and Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome, has announced a busy 2025 calendar. With a focus on exhibitions, restorations, and initiatives dedicated to the study and dissemination of its heritage, the Foundation is preparing to showcase its masterpieces internationally and to open its restoration laboratories to professionals in the field.
An International Tour Across the United States and Canada
In 2025, the exhibition Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection will mark the debut of the Torlonia Collection in North America. Curated by Lisa Ayla Çakmak and Katherine A. Raff, the exhibition will be hosted by some of the most prestigious museums on the continent:
- Art Institute of Chicago (March 15 – June 29, 2025)
- Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (September 13, 2025 – January 25, 2026)
- Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (March – July 2026).
The exhibition will bring to North America some of the most significant masterpieces of the Torlonia Collection. Highlights include renowned portrait busts, monumental mythological figures, exquisite decorative cups, sarcophagi, and sculpted reliefs. Nearly sixty sculptures, spanning from the 5th century BCE to the 2nd century CE, have been specially studied and restored by the Foundation for this event. Most of these works date back to the Imperial Age, a pinnacle of ancient Roman artistic innovation.
Of particular note is the restoration of 27 sculptures specifically for this exhibition by the Torlonia Laboratories, adding to the 12 pieces restored for the ongoing exhibition at the Louvre (extended until January 6, 2025). This brings the total number of restored sculptures in recent years to over 150, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to preserving its invaluable cultural legacy.
