The new Range Rover Sport Electric was tested in the demanding conditions of Carrara’s marble quarries, with the marble landscape, steep gradients and distinctive terrain forming part of one of the model’s final development stages

The marble quarries of Carrara provided the setting for one of the final and most demanding development tests of the new Range Rover Sport Electric ahead of its commercial launch.

Land Rover selected the distinctive landscape of the Apuan Alps to assess the electric SUV under real-world conditions, in an environment characterised by steep gradients, narrow roads and changing terrain. The test took place at elevations of up to approximately 914 metres, with the vehicle travelling through quarry areas dominated by Carrara’s characteristic white marble.

Testing in quarry conditions

The quarry routes created a demanding environment for evaluating the vehicle’s traction and driving behaviour. The Range Rover Sport Electric was required to tackle gradients of up to 45 degrees, while the route also included water crossings of up to 900 mm in depth.

The test was carried out in genuine quarry conditions, with changes in elevation, narrow access roads and the varying terrain creating a complex environment for vehicle evaluation.

The landscape differs considerably from a purpose-built testing facility. Access roads follow the contours of the Apuan Alps, while extensive marble surfaces and quarry faces form a distinctive setting for vehicle development.

A working quarry landscape

The choice of Carrara is directly connected to the character of the area. Its quarries remain active production sites, supported by an extensive network of roads and infrastructure serving the marble industry.

The routes across the Apuan slopes feature significant changes in elevation and limited manoeuvring space, allowing Land Rover to test the capabilities of its electric model in a real and particularly demanding environment.

At the same time, the large volumes of white marble and the characteristic quarry faces provide an internationally recognisable image of one of the world’s most important natural stone production areas.

The technology of the Range Rover Sport Electric

The electric Range Rover Sport is equipped with two electric motors delivering up to 550 PS and 850 Nm of torque. Its all-wheel-drive system electronically manages power distribution, adapting to changes in surface conditions and available traction.

Manoeuvrability was another important aspect of the test. The narrow quarry routes provided an opportunity to assess the four-wheel steering system, which at low speeds turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels, reducing the vehicle’s turning circle.

The Carrara test forms part of the model’s final development phase, with Land Rover using real-world conditions alongside its controlled testing environments.

Carrara and the marble industry

Carrara is one of the world’s most important marble-producing centres, with its quarries remaining at the heart of an industry with deep historical and industrial roots.

The areas around Carrara, Miseglia and Colonnata are closely associated with the production of the white marble that has made the region internationally renowned. The stone has played a defining role in the history of sculpture, architecture and design and remains one of Italy’s best-known natural stone products in international markets.

At the same time, the quarry landscape has become one of Carrara’s most recognisable features, creating a distinctive combination of production, expertise, culture and international visibility.

From quarry to high technology

The Range Rover Sport Electric test adds another dimension to Carrara’s international profile.

On quarry roads within a landscape shaped by centuries of marble extraction, a new electric SUV underwent demanding development testing. Steep gradients, limited manoeuvring space, the terrain of the Apuan Alps and the distinctive surfaces of the quarry environment all formed part of the development process.

The choice also highlights the uniqueness of the Carrara landscape. An active marble-producing area was used as a real-world testing ground for new technology, offering conditions that are difficult to fully reproduce in artificial facilities.

For the marble industry, the images also present the quarry in another context: not only as a place of extraction, but as a distinctive productive landscape with strong international recognition, capable of hosting activities linked to advanced technology and global visibility.

With its white marble dominating the landscape of the Apuan Alps, Carrara thus became the setting for a different kind of technological test. And alongside the Range Rover Sport Electric, one of the world’s most iconic marble-producing landscapes remains at the centre of the story.
