What did Germany import the most in the first three months of 2021, marble, granite or ceramics?

Germany is one of the largest markets in the world, especially for imports of ceramics and granite. Marble imports are lower, but remain relatively high. Statistics show that the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown did not adversely affect German marble, granite and ceramic imports. Specifically, between 2019 – 2020 there was an increase in the value of imports of ceramics by + 7.77%, marbles + 1.25% while in granites a marginal decline of -0.56% was recorded.

Between the first trimester of 2020 – 2021, only marble imports recovered, while ceramics and granites fell slightly.

In the table below we see the changes (%) in the value of exports between the first trimesters of 2020 – 2021, the 4th trimester of 2020 and the 1st trimester of 2021 of imports of marble, granite and ceramics from Germany.

The increase in ceramics between the first three months of 2020 – 2021 is due to the increase in imports from Italy, Turkey and Poland. The decline in granites is due to the reduction of imports from China, which is the main supplier of Germany. However, the decline was kept low due to rising imports mainly from India and Italy. The increase in marbles is due to the increase in imports from Turkey.

Between the 4th trimester of 2020 and the first three months of 2021, the decline in imports of all three materials is due to the decrease in imports from the mentioned supplier countries.

Germany’s marble imports in the first three months of 2021 exceeded 9.5 million Euros, in granite, 55 million Euros and in ceramics, 161.5 million Euros.
