From consolidating existing positions to conquering new markets, Sardinian stone companies took center stage at Marmomac, the world’s leading trade fair for the stone industry, held in Verona. The three-day event hosted over 1,400 exhibitors from 50 countries and attracted some 50,000 visitors from around the globe.
Entrepreneurs from Sardinia — active in both raw material extraction and the production of finished stone products — had the opportunity to showcase their work and connect with potential buyers. Supporting companies from Orosei, Abbasanta, Buddusò, Ittiri, and Sedilo, the Sardinian Regional Government set up a dedicated stand, reaffirming its commitment to promoting a sector already known for its variety of internationally appreciated products, such as Orosei’s Daino marble, which is exported to China, India, Jordan, the EU, and Northern Europe.
According to Anna Scancella, owner of Scancella Marmi and Simg Orosei, European demand remains stable, while Asia and the Middle East continue to drive high-end projects. To seize future opportunities, she highlights the need for greater efficiency, automation, intermodal logistics, port agreements, environmental certifications, and post-sale services.
Sardinian granite, however, is facing a slowdown due to global tensions. Giovanni Soro, head of Sga Buddusò, expects recovery once conflicts ease, emphasizing the need for regional support to reduce transport costs, boost productivity, and invest in workforce training.
Rosanna Dessena of Gv Orosei Marbles reported positive outcomes, with growing exports to Asia and China confirmed as the main destination for Orosei marble. Meanwhile, Ittiri’s hard trachyte — historically used in Sardinian architecture — is poised to transition from a local hallmark to a strategic material for national and international markets, according to Roberto Soro of Trachite Artigiana.
With its diverse natural stones — marble, granite, trachyte, and basalt — and skilled craftsmanship, Sardinia has all the ingredients to establish itself as a leading stone district in the Mediterranean, combining artisanal tradition with environmentally conscious technological innovation.
