What was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on USA finished marble products imports from Italy in the nine months of 2020?

Italy is one of the leading suppliers of finished marble products in the United States. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown imposed affected imports but not as much as expected. In particular, despite being one of the most affected countries, USA’S finished marble products imports from Italy between the nine months 2019 – 2020 recorded a decrease in value -21.26% and quantity -20.85%.

In the Table below we see the monthly changes in the value and quantity of USA’s finished marble products imports between the nine months of period 2019 – 2020.

In the Table we observe that the downward trend of imports starts from the beginning of the year, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown in the USA and Italy. Note also the time required for the transportation and customs clearance of the marbles, from Italy to the USA.

In May, June and July imports reflect the impact of the pandemic and the lockdown. However, the large increase between June – July by 73.32% in value and 65.85% in quantity, marks the recovery of the following months which in August and September exceeded the imports of 2019.

The first nine months of 2020, the first in the import of Italian finished marble products, was the District of New York with a share of 30.28% of the total value of US imports. It is followed by the Districts of Los Angeles with 17.32%, Miami with 10.57%, Houston-Galveston with 8.01% and San Francisco with 7.65%.
